A stray dog brought into a California animal shelter has found his way back home to his original owner — a state away.

Upon Churro’s arrival at a Riverside County Animal Services shelter, staff scanned the 11-year-old’s microchip, the shelter said in a May 18 Facebook post.

“His microchip lit up with hope,” and staff called the registered owner, the shelter said.

While speaking with the owner, he told staff “he had made the tough decision to rehome Churro due to financial hardship,” according to the shelter.

The owner tried to reach Churro’s new owner.

With no response, “he decided to step up once more,” the shelter said.

“He booked a flight from Oregon and came all the way to Riverside to bring Churro home again,” the shelter said. “He told us he wanted Churro to live out his golden years surrounded by love, care, and family.”

A video of “Churro’s happy reunion” shows him excitedly wagging his tail as he gets pets from his owner inside the shelter.

He then follows his owner to a parked SUV outside.

The owner scoops Churro up and plops him down on the giant dog bed sitting in the SUV.

“Welcome home, Churro,” the shelter said.
