3 dead, others injured after shooting at casino in Reno; suspect in custody
Reno police officers detained a suspect Monday morning after a shooting reported by authorities at the city’s Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, according to local news outlets.
Six people were shot and three were killed, said Chief Chris Crawforth of the Sparks Police Department, which is overseeing investigations into the shooting, at a news conference Monday afternoon.
Two victims died on the scene after two separate encounters with the suspect, Crawforth said. A third victim died in a hospital. One person who had suffered gunshot wounds was released from the hospital, while two other victims remained in critical condition, Crawforth said.
The suspect was also in critical condition at a hospital, where he was taken for treatment after Reno Police Department officers shot him on the scene, Crawforth said.
Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve told the Reno Gazette-Journal she did not know how the shooting began.
“It could have been much, much worse,” Schieve told the newspaper.
At the news conference, Crawforth said the suspect had used a handgun that initially malfunctioned before he began to shoot at a group of people outside the casino. He also said the suspect had “multiple firearm magazines.”
In a 7:35 a.m. social media post, the Reno Police Department urged residents to stay away from the Grand Sierra Resort, a hotel and casino. Roughly an hour later, the Police Department announced that a suspect had been taken into custody “with no outstanding threat to the community.”
“My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community,” Reno Councilmember Devon Reese wrote on Facebook. “Reno is strong — but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation.”
The Sparks Police Department, in the city directly east of Reno, was leading investigations into the incident, including the “officer involved shooting,” according to a news release from Reno city government. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office was assisting in the investigations.
Medical staff from the Grand Sierra Resort had helped care for victims and the suspect after the shooting, the news release said.
In a statement, the casino said it was cooperating with the police investigation and continuing its operations.
“We are heartbroken by the senseless violence that occurred in our parking area earlier today,” said the statement from Grand Sierra Resort. “Our thoughts are with the victims and all those affected by this tragic incident.”
