California’s Growing Cannabis Industry

Cannabis business boomed during the pandemic — really, ever since California legalized recreational marijuana — but industry insiders warn a familiar cluster of obstacles is holding back entrepreneurs even amid the tremendous growth of the past two years.

The five year anniversary of the passage of Proposition 64, which legalized the recreational use of marijuana for adults over age 21, is rapidly approaching.

And it came 20 years after the Golden State became the first to legalize medicinal marijuana.

If you’re looking to celebrate that milestone on Nov. 8, check out these dispensaries in the Sacramento region to support local cannabis businesses. But don’t forget: you can’t consume weed in public places.

Three notable choices

Kolas

Locations: 1220 Blumenfeld Dr., 6666 Fruitridge Rd, 5711 Florin Perkins Rd., 1704 Main Ave., 8848 Fruitridge Rd. and 6435 Florin Perkins Rd.

With six locations across Sacramento, Kolas is the biggest name in town.

And the company’s new chief executive told the Sacramento Business Journal last month that Kolas set a goal to triple its current footprint over the next two years.

Kolas has also been in the news for stranger reasons: The Bee reported in 2019 that a Kolas founder and its former chief executive had ties to a Ukrainian-born man indicted in a campaign-finance scheme alongside two associates of Rudy Giuliani.

All Kolas locations are open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week.

A Therapeutic Alternative

Location: 3015 H St

This H Street dispensary was recently voted best place to buy cannabis by Sacramento Magazine readers. It was founded in 2009 by medical cannabis patients’ rights advocates, according to the website. While it’s health-focused, it sells weed for recreational use in addition to medicinal use.

Store hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week.

Cookies and Lemonnade

Locations: 1716 J St., 1115 Fee Dr. and 1421 47th Ave.

These dispensaries are sister stores founded by hip hop artist Berner. Cookies is the J Street location in midtown, while Lemonnade now has two locations in the Erickson Industrial Park area and the Freeport Manor area.

Both brands feature collaborations with artists, designers and cannabis influencers, according to a news release announcing the opening of Lemonnade.

All three locations are open daily 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
