Large hay fire burning in south Sacramento County, after 2 large rural fires Sunday
Hot, dry and windy weather has led to a spate of moderate-sized fires in rural Sacramento County over Memorial Day weekend.
The Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department as of Monday morning was fighting a “large haystack fire” located off Arno Road in south Sacramento County, along Highway 99. No other details about the ongoing incident, first reported just before 8 a.m. were immediately available.
A fire near Wilton grew from 5 to 25 acres Sunday afternoon amid high winds, damaging about a half-dozen outbuildings, according to a dispatcher. The fire appeared mostly extinguished by about 4 p.m.
A 100-acre blaze burning near Eschinger Road, south of Elk Grove, was contained Sunday evening, the Cosumnes Fire Department said in a tweet. A hay barn and livestock were saved, fire officials said.
No one was reported injured in any of the three fires, authorities said in tweets.
Separately, Cosumnes Fire officials responded to an overnight water rescue in the early hours of Memorial Day after a vehicle was partially submerged in a dairy pond with a victim trapped inside, according to another tweet by the department. The victim was recovered without injury, Cosumnes Fire officials reported at about 2:30 a.m.
