Map: See which California counties have partially reopened from coronavirus stay-at-home orders
Nearly two months after Gov. Gavin Newsom gave a statewide stay-at-home order to slow the spread of coronavirus on March 19, some counties have been given approval to reopen some of their nonessential businesses.
As of May 21, 40 counties have been approved to advance through Stage 2 of California’s reopening plan at an accelerated pace, meaning retail stores and dine-in restaurants are cleared to open with social distancing protocols in place.
The California Department of Public Health requires counties looking to reopen at an accelerated pace to demonstrate a low and stable number of COVID-19 cases, and a capacity for increased testing, hospitalization and protection of frontline workers and vulnerable populations. Until May 18, the standard required no COVID-19 deaths in the previous 14 days.
The rest of the state remains at the beginning of Stage 2, which adds permissions for curb-side retail, select services and childcare for those outside of the essential workforce.
