‘Black in Sac’ 11/18/21: Thanksgiving donation drives, art, music and wine tasting

The “Black in Sac” event list was created to elevate the region’s Black creators, owners and organizers as they help shape the identity of the “city of trees.”

We’re on week 11 and counting.

We always look forward to featuring the events happening around Sacramento each week. Be sure to reach out to The Equity Lab via email or social media to inquire about the weekly, bi-weekly, and even monthly events that you or your favorite organization have going on.

Whether the events are created and curated by Black creators, or you believe a venue is a nice hangout enriched with culture, please submit the event and details in the Google Form, here.

Here are some events and activities in the city to attend this weekend on this week’s ‘Black in Sac’ from Nov. 18 through Nov. 24.

Sacramento Black Mental Health + Criminal “Justice” Real Talk

ONTRACK Program Resources will host a two-part virtual event series discussing new public initiatives in the city and county of Sacramento that can potentially address the issues of mental health and policing. The first part was held on Wednesday, Nov. 17.

Session two, “The Response,” will be held on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Day two will include a list of panelists that are officials in the city and county. The new initiatives focusing on behavioral health and criminal “justice” will be explained. The objective is to ensure that Black communities are aware of these local initiatives; this is the opportunity to have meaningful input.

Get R.E.A.L. to Heal

Dwight Taylor Sr. is hosting a high-energy, interactive workshop that will take participants through empowering explorations of how expecting the greater reward can positively impact their lives and the lives of others.

Workshop participants will define what expecting the greater reward means to them, discuss the role it plays in their lives and determine how they will implement it daily.

There will be activities designed to assist participants in becoming more aware of their uniqueness and more vital to their sphere of influence. The objective is to encourage, equip and empower each participant to start expecting the best out of every situation, for the purpose of healing themselves and others.

This is a free support group for African American and Black men. Ages 18-24 are strongly encouraged to attend, the event is open to all ages.

Registration for the event is available here, this event is an in-person event on Thursday located at 520 Ninth Street Suite 102, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

DJ DAAN Presents: Get Yo Roll On Skate Party

DJ Daan will present a “Get Yo Roll On” skate party on Thursday from 9 p.m. to midnight, at Roller King Skating Center in Roseville.

Roller King is located at 889 Riverside Ave.

Tickets are $15 before 10 p.m and will be sold at the door. Skate rentals are included in the ticket price. This week’s special is a donation drive where nonperishable food items will be accepted. Donations are also appreciated. Discounts are available with donations.

Children’s Literacy Book Drive

Nonprofit organization Escape Velocity Resources Foundation, Inc. is asking for donations to their Children’s Literacy Book Drive, beginning Thursday until Dec. 15.

They are accepting new and gently used African-American baby, children’s and young adult books. Donations can be dropped off at All Things Literacy Books & More Bookstore, located at 2251 Florin Rd., Suite 113.

The following times are their available drop off times.

  • Wednesday, Noon to 4 p.m.

  • Thursday, Noon to 5 p.m.

  • Saturdays, Noon to 5 p.m.

Giving Back Matters Annual Turkey Drive

Voice of the Youth (VOY), a nonprofit organization in Sacramento, is hosting their annual Turkey Drive on Friday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

It will be a drive thru event for families in need of a turkey this Thanksgiving. Free registration is available here.

The distribution will take place at John Bidwell Elementary School, located at 1730 65th Ave., from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Thanksgiving Grocery Giveaway

Neighbor Program and Del Paso Union Baptist Church are inviting families out to their Thanksgiving Grocery Giveaway where families will receive a turkey and a box of groceries to prepare a meal during the holiday season.

The giveaway will take place on Friday starting at 4 p.m. Distribution will be held at Del Paso Union Baptist Church, located at 1335 Los Robles Blvd.

They look forward to getting to know the Del Paso Heights community. Their goal is to continue serving the people.

Neighbor Program is a Pan-African Socialist Organization committed to serving the people and loving their neighbors. They are partnering with Del Paso Union Baptist Church to bring Del Paso Heights a Free Grocery Program and Liberation School.

“LOVE Fridays”

Tiger is bringing back their “Love Fridays” theme where every Friday the DJs will play R&B and love songs all night long.

Get ready to either feel the vibe or be in your feels. Regardless, it will be a sensational outing.

The United Core Alliance

The United Core Alliance (UCA) will be hosting their monthly expungement clinic on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The clinic is geared toward clearing records and assisting residents with accessibility to jobs, housing and education. The clinics are free and no documentation is required to attend.

The event will be held at Neighborhood Network, located at 4626 44th St.

Tap in Black

Jamal Freeman presents Tap in Black, a southern style speakeasy featuring Black-owned spirits and cigar brands.

The event takes place on Saturday from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at The Brickhouse Gallery, located at 2837 36th St.

Tickets are $30 and available for purchase on Eventbrite. A ticket gets you entrance to the event, along with one cigar, personal 8 oz bottle and a BBQ plate.

Faith J. McKinnie Gallery presents : Jupiter The Artist

The Faith J. McKinnie Gallery is a newly opened, Black-operated contemporary art gallery in midtown, on 1610 R St., in Rice Alley behind Device Brewing Co.

Starting Saturday through Jan. 2, the gallery will host a solo exhibit showcasing the artwork and projects of Jupiter, the artist.

Jupiter says the show was created to focus on the gaze and perceptions that have been placed upon African American and Black people in this country.

The gallery is open Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday it is open from noon to 4 p.m. FJM Gallery is also open by appointment. The event is free and open to the public.

Friendsgiving by Soapy Bartending Services

Soapy Bartending Services (SBS) is presenting a Friendsgiving hosted at The Odd Cookie, located at 1015 Ninth St., from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

SBS will be asking guests to bring new or gently used jackets, blankets or tarps. Those who bring one of those will receive one free drink. One drink per guest. Donations will go toward bringing warmth to those experiencing homelessness.

Tickets are $10 and available for purchase on Eventbrite.

Ceaze The Moment Presents: Thanksgiving Donation Drive

Ceaze the Moment is a 501c(3) non profit organization based in Oak Park, founded by Julius Douglas. It is hosting a second annual Thanksgiving Donation Drive giving back to families throughout the neighborhood.

Distribution of meals will happen on Sunday at Neighborhood Network, located at 4626 44th St., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This event is first come, first serve. Ceaze the Moment plans to provide turkeys, hams, fresh produce, canned goods, and other non-perishable items.

Last year, the nonprofit was able to deliver meals to more than 200 families.

Thanksgiving Turkey Basket Give-N-Go

Marcquise Dionte Burgess, better known as “Skar,‘‘ is a local rap artist from Lincoln Village showing love to his city by giving back to Rancho Cordova.

Burgess will be hosting his Thanksgiving Turkey Basket Give-N-Go on Sunday at Lincoln Village Community Park, located at 3480 Routier Rd., from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Only one turkey basket per household will be provided, and it will be on a first come, first served basis, while supplies last. There will be food, music, games, and other types of entertainment for the family to enjoy the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving.

BFW Second Anniversary

Baker Family Wines are prepared to celebrate their second anniversary. From noon to 6 p.m. they will have music, food, barrel tasting and other specials as they celebrate two years in the West Sacramento location.

The winery is located at 2568 Industrial Blvd., suite 120.

Baker Family Wines is founded by MLB manager Dusty Baker and winemaker Chik Brenneman who have created a line of hand-crafted, limited production wines.

Naija Boy Taco Tuesday at Ro Sham Beaux

The Naija Boy Taco Tuesday is a weekly event at Ro Sham Beaux, located at 2413 J St.

Rasheed Amedu is bringing West African flavor to Mexican cuisine every Tuesday, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Urban Legendz Presents: Thanksgiving for Everyone

Local artist, business owner and entrepreneur Erick Davies, best known as King Deezy, is giving back to the community with his third annual Thanksgiving for Everyone donation drive.

They will be serving hot plates and handing them out to the homeless. In 2020, Davies was able to feed over 250 homeless people and serve over 20 families.

He will distribute on Wednesday, Nov. 24, at Exhale Smoke Shop, starting at noon, located at 2830 E St. Volunteers are needed; reach out to Davies through his Instagram account, “@k1ngdeezy”.

Spectra karaoke on Wednesdays at Streets Pub

Spectra is a musician, artist and an avid fan of karaoke.

On Wednesdays, you can find her at Streets Pub, a Black-owned bar located on 1804 J St.

She also hosts karaoke at Faces Nightclub, located 2000 K St., on Thursdays and Lighthouse Bar and Grill, located on West Capitol Avenue in West Sacramento, on Fridays and Saturdays.
