Black in Sac: Holiday Marketplace, Irie Nights, Black Creatives celebrated at Sac State

Black in Sac event listings have been going on for 14 weeks and counting. Updates are made possible with your Google Forms entries, emails and social media posts. We appreciate your listings and thank you for continuing to allow us to highlight events throughout the city.

There are plenty of things to do this weekend. We’ve got you covered this week between Dec. 9 and Dec. 15. Here’s a list of things you can invite your friends and family to. Remember to dress warm, the leaves may be falling but the winter chill has bestowed upon us. Take necessary health precautions, if you’re feeling under the weather, stay home.

Check out some of all the things to do in Sacramento over the weekend and the upcoming week.

Sac State Black Alumni Chapter Celebrates Black Creatives

The Sac State Black Alumni Chapter is hosting an evening of entertainment, connections, and refreshments at the Brickhouse Gallery from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 9.

Spoken word poet, Coon the Poet, will be performing live at the event, located at 2837 36th St.

The event is free for current Sac State students and $5 for admission to non-Sacramento State students. Registration and RSVP are available here.

Tiger

Tiger is a lounge and bar, located at 722 K St., that has upped the nightlife in Sacramento with its weekly lineup. Their “Purr” Thursdays, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m, is ladies’ night featuring DJ sets by DJ Eddy, DJ Genetixx and DJ Jay.

For those who enjoy R&B music, Tiger hosts its “Love” Fridays that features live music from local artist Julian Cunningham, better known by his artist name, Jamal Tru and Hayez, the band. DJ Fontaine, of BaseOne.fm and DJ Patrick Coe will be mixing sounds in different sets from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Saturday nights are HOF Night featuring music from Jamal Tru and Hayez, with DJ sets from DJ Robbie, DJ Eddy, and DJ Gio.

There will be a $20 cover charge after 10 p.m. VIP reservations are available. For more information, contact management at Tiger.

Irie Nights

Irie Nights returns to Sacramento and if you’ve been to an Irie Night event then you know the vibes. If you’ve never been to Irie Nights, this is your chance to come out and enjoy a night of afrobeats, Caribbean, and dancehall music. OMG Prince and friends will be at District 30, located at 1022 K St., on Friday, Dec. 10.

Ages 21 and up are welcome. The event begins at 10 p.m. For tickets, visit www.irienights.com.

The Night Market Series Presents: The Holiday Marketplace

The Night Market is back presenting “The Holiday Marketplace” on Saturday, Dec. 11, at Esther’s Park, located at 3408 Third Ave. The event is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will feature food vendors, live music and performances, including sounds mixed by DJ Smash.

There will be over 20 different local vendors to shop from. There will be plenty of Christmas activities around the 40 Acres Complex, including pictures with Black Santa, holiday arts and crafts activities, children’s storytime, and a family holiday movie at the Guild Theater.

Pictures with Santa will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Following pictures will be the showing of ‘Jingle Jangle’ from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

This event, along with parking, is free of charge. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP through the Eventbrite link available.

Children’s Literacy Book Drive

Nonprofit organization, Escape Velocity Resources Foundation, Inc. is asking for donations to their Children’s Literacy Book Drive through Dec. 15.

They are accepting new and gently used African-American baby, children’s and young adult books. Donations can be dropped off at All Things Literacy Books & More Bookstore, located at 2251 Florin Road, Suite 113.

The following times are their available drop-off times.

  • Noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday

  • Noon to 5 p.m. Thursday

  • Noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays

Self-Defense Training presented by Our Streets Coalition

On Saturdays, Our Streets Coalition partners with Black Lives Matter (BLM) Sacramento and All-African People’s Revolutionary Party to teach useful self-defense information to the community.

On Dec. 11, they will teach their training class “Secure The Hood: Small Crew, Family, Friends Security Practices” from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m, at McClatchy Park, located at 3500 35th Ave.

They are inviting the community to learn how to protect themselves, their community, and de-escalate while gathering information. For more information visit the BLM Sacramento Facebook page.

In the past, they have taught how to build a security plan and weapon defense training. There will not be Christmas and New Year’s weekends.

Faith J. McKinnie Gallery presents: Jupiter The Artist

The Faith J. McKinnie Gallery is a newly opened, Black-operated contemporary art gallery in midtown, on 1610 R St., in Rice Alley behind Device Brewing Co.

The gallery will host a solo exhibit showcasing the artwork and projects of Jupiter, the artist, through Jan. 2.

Jupiter says the show was created to focus on the gaze and perceptions that have been placed upon African American and Black people in this country. She gives Black figures the audacity to take space on canvases in their authenticity.

The gallery is open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. FJM Gallery is also open by appointment. The event is free and open to the public.

Naija Boy Taco Tuesday at Ro Sham Beaux

The Naija Boy Taco Tuesday is a weekly event at Ro Sham Beaux, 2413 J St.

Rasheed Amedu is bringing West African flavor to Mexican cuisine from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Tuesday.

There he will provide Naija vibes and natty wine when you dine with him on Tuesday, Nov. 9.

Spectra karaoke on Wednesdays at Streets Pub

Spectra is a musician, artist and avid fan of karaoke.

On Wednesdays, you can find her at Streets Pub, a Black-owned bar, located on 1804 J St. Join her on Dec. 1.

She also hosts karaoke at Faces Nightclub, located 2000 K St., on Thursdays and Lighthouse Bar and Grill, located at West Capitol Avenue in West Sacramento, on Fridays and Saturdays.
