Gas is over $6. This nonprofit is giving away free gift cards to help purchase fuel
The high cost of gasoline is being widely felt across the nation and in Sacramento, and a local nonprofit is raising funds to help residents in the capital region battle sky-rocketing prices with gift cards for gas.
The plan by Voice of the Youth founder Berry Accius and his team is to help families who are feeling the pinch at the pump.
“It’s been a struggle for families,” said Accius. “My team just looked at it as what can we do to help people take off a little bit of the weight.”
Accius said gas prices are putting a strain on families, forcing them to make a decision between driving to work or refilling the refrigerator. He and his team plan to give out as many as 400 gift cards to help offset the higher costs. Each card will have $25 to $50 to use at select gas stations.
“It doesn’t alleviate all the pain,” Accius said. “We’re hoping to take some of the load off so a person doesn’t have to make the choice of gas or food.”
Between 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday, the group will be at the Sam Pannell Community Center, 2450 Meadowview Road, to hand out the cards. Those interested in receiving one must register by email to voyimpact@gmail.com.
Voice of the Youth is also looking for those to help contribute to the program. Donations can be made at voiceoftheyouth.org/donate or mailed to 2251 Florin Road, Suite 35, Sacramento, CA 95822.
