Two pedestrians killed in Carmichael crash were next-door neighbors on morning walk
The coroner’s office has released the identity of the second 72-year-old woman who died after being struck by a teen driver last Friday in residential Carmichael.
Marie Beckman, of Carmichael, died Saturday at the hospital after sustaining major injuries when a 16-year-old girl reportedly swerved for unknown reasons into the right shoulder of Arden Way near Gary Way, striking Beckman and Peggy McClendon.
McClendon died Friday in the hospital from her injuries, California Highway Patrol officials said.
Beckman and McClendon lived next door to each other in a cul-de-sac about a mile away from where they were hit, public records available online show. They were in the midst of an apparent routine morning walk about 9:30 a.m. Friday when they were fatally struck, officials said.
CHP North Sacramento spokesman Officer Mike Zerfas said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Drugs or alcohol were determined to not be a factor, but because the driver is a minor and the investigation remains active, further details regarding the driver are limited.
The stretch of Arden Way where the two women were hit does not have a sidewalk, CHP noted in a news release.
