Here’s how much more Sacramento will charge for garbage and recycling pickup in 2020

City of Sacramento residents will pay roughly an extra $6 per month for garbage, recycling and yard waste pickup in July, the City Council decided Tuesday.

The increased rate, starting at about $3 per month, will go into effect Jan. 1. On July 1, an additional roughly $3 a month will be added. The increases will be permanent.

The rate for a household with a 64-gallon garbage container is currently $36.89 per month.

City staff originally proposed the City Council approve five years of rate increases, which would have totaled $12 in 2022.

The council decided to approve the rate increases for the first half of 2020, then revisit the issue early next year.

Mayor Darrell Steinberg said he wanted to use consultants to find efficiencies to either eliminate the need to raise rates, or find ways to improve services in exchange for the raised rates.

Councilwoman Angelique Ashby said many Natomas residents request the city pick up recycling every week instead of every other week, which could be one service added.

The increased rates will help the city keep up with its rising population, cover new recycling processing costs, cover increasing costs to maintain former landfills at Sutter’s Landing Park and build a compressed natural gas refueling station at the Meadowview City Service Center, city officials have said.
