Specialty houseware shop William Glen closing Fair Oaks Blvd. storefront after 5 years

William Glen, the specialty home goods store that reappeared in Sacramento five years ago, will be closing once again.

In a message sent out to the community, president and CEO Mark Snyder said the storefront at 2310 Fair Oaks Boulevard will be closing on Feb. 24.

The original William Glen was founded in 1963 by Bill Snyder in the Town and Country Village Shopping Center, but that location closed in 2010 shortly after Bill’s death.

William Glen made a return on Fair Oaks Boulevard in late 2014, led by Bill’s children, Mark Snyder and Amy Guthrie.

Snyder said the new store ran out its five-year lease, and the company made the decision not to renew it.

“There are many, many reasons for this decision but the most resounding of all is that this space is not big enough to provide the growth of variety and selection you have requested of us,” Snyder said. “When looking back on the decision to open this space, it was always viewed as a launch pad for something more.”

Snyder said the company has not found a viable space that would accommodate growth, but will continue to look for a new location.

“If a new space presents itself, we hope to be back in the area to serve,” Snyder said.

William Glen will be offering a discount of 25% on all items plus 60% off seasonal items until the store closes.

Snyder and Guthrie also opened Christmas & Company and Chef’s Mercantile in Old Sacramento in 2010. The two stores remain open.
