Woman and daughter killed in head-on Highway 99 crash in Yuba City, CHP says

A two-car crash in Yuba City killed a woman and her 2-year-old daughter Saturday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The head-on incident occurred at 4:40 a.m. on Highway 99, south of Hutchinson Road, the CHP’s Yuba-Sutter office said in a news release.

Adele Vershaw Behan, 24, and the toddler, Yuba City residents, were killed in the crash. Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision, the CHP said.

Behan was driving the minivan northbound on Highway 99 at an unknown speed before she drifted into the center median and left into southbound lanes, the CHP said. After crossing the southbound lanes and running into the shoulder, Behan corrected sharply to the right, crossing into the path of a Jeep Liberty being driven northbound by a 50-year-old woman also from Yuba City.

That driver, who was driving 65 mph in the SUV, suffered several broken bones. and was transported to Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville, the CHP said.

Drugs and alcohol were not a contributing factor, according to the release. The collision remains under investigation.
