Demonstrators scuffled with uniformed law enforcement officers in a vivid and tense protest at California’s state Capitol on Friday. Several people were arrested just before 1 p.m. as protesters lurched toward California Highway Patrol officers that had lined across the west steps of the building to prevent them from entering.

Defying Gov. Gavin Newsom’s stay-at-home order and a CHP ban on protests on state properties, hundreds of demonstrators descended on the landmark downtown Sacramento building to demand the reopening of schools, businesses and churches despite the coronavirus pandemic.
