Big rig overturns on Highway 50 in Sacramento, backs up traffic near Howe Avenue

A tractor-trailer overturned Tuesday afternoon, spilling some diesel fuel and backing up westbound lanes of Highway 50 in Sacramento, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The vehicle crash was first reported about 1:40 p.m. on Highway 50 near Howe Avenue. The big-rig came to rest on its side. There was no immediate indication from the CHP that injuries were reported.

At one point, two westbound lanes were blocked and backed up westbound traffic from Howe to Watt Avenue. Authorities also closed the northbound Howe Avenue on-ramp to westbound Highway as firefighters worked to clear the scene.

The CHP indicated in its dispatch logs shortly before 2:30 p.m. that these traffic lanes could remain closed for at least another two hours. Authorities had called for a tow-truck to remove the crashed big-rig.
