Stolen car in high-speed chase goes from Woodland to Sacramento before arrest, police say
Officers on Wednesday arrested a man found driving a stolen vehicle after a high-speed police chase that began in Woodland and continued through downtown Sacramento before ending more than 20 miles from where the pursuit started.
About 10:30 a.m., officers spotted a vehicle speeding on East Main Street in Woodland. The vehicle matched the description of a vehicle that reportedly followed another vehicle, the Woodland Police Department announced on its Facebook page Wednesday afternoon.
The suspect vehicle was driving recklessly and possibly stalking the driver of the other vehicle, police said. When police spotted the suspect vehicle later, an officer attempted a traffic stop.
Police said the suspect vehicle failed to pull over and got on southbound Interstate 5, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph.
The police pursuit moved onto the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 before heading east on U.S. Highway 50 and exiting the freeway in downtown Sacramento.
Officials said the driver in the suspect vehicle continued onto city streets, violating traffic laws until the vehicle stopped under a Highway 99 overpass in the 6000 block of Orange Avenue in south Sacramento.
The driver, later identified as Aaron Meredith of Sacramento, got out of the vehicle and ran away, but he was quickly apprehended, according to police. Officers discovered that the vehicle was reported stolen.
A KCRA helicopter followed the chase until officers took the suspect into custody.
Meredith, 36, was arrested on suspicion of evading police and possessing a stolen vehicle, and he was booked at the Yolo County Jail.
The Sacramento Police Department and the California Highway Patrol assisted in the pursuit.
