CHP recovers bullets on Highway 50 in Sacramento after hearing ‘rounds begin to go off’
The California Highway Patrol closed a portion of U.S. Highway 50 in Sacramento on Tuesday after an officer heard what sounded like gunshots fired from bullets that were found scattered on the freeway.
About 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, CHP dispatchers received a calls reporting a box of shotgun shells blocking one of the eastbound lanes of the highway near 59th Street.
An officer from the South Sacramento CHP Office arrived and spotted shotgun, pistol and rifle bullets on all eastbound lanes, the CHP said in a Facebook post.
The officer was assessing the situation and heard “rounds begin to go off,” the CHP said. It was not clear to the CHP if the bullets were fired after they were run over by a vehicle or from the heat.
That portion of the highway was closed for about 20 minutes while authorities removed the bullets from the road. The CHP said there were no injuries reported or vehicles damaged by the gunfire.
The ammunition and spent shells were taken to the CHP Academy shooting range for disposal.
