Sacramento curfew to continue through the weekend. National Guard to remain for days
Sacramento’s 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew will stay in place through the weekend, city officials said Wednesday.
“Then we’ll start fresh next week,” Mayor Darrell Steinberg said.
The National Guard will also likely be in the city for at least the next few days, Steinberg said.
The city is not taking these steps casually and wants to only do it as long as necessary, Steinberg said.
Steinberg and Police Chief Daniel Hahn took a knee in solidarity while attending an event in Oak Park on Wednesday morning for George Floyd, the black man killed by a white officer in Minneapolis, sparking protests around the country and in Sacramento against police brutality.
After the peaceful protests ended Saturday and Sunday nights in downtown Sacramento, small groups of vandals not believed to be associated with the protesters went on a crime spree, causing an estimated $10 million in damages to 130 businesses and public buildings.
Monday, the city announced an 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew and called in about 500 National Guard troops to defend private and public property.
The Sacramento Police Department has so far arrested more than 60 people for curfew violations.
