Placer County residents evacuated after vehicle fire sparks 50-acre blaze, Cal Fire says
Placer County sheriff’s deputies on Thursday evacuated residents living near Walerga Road just north of Antelope as firefighters corralled a 50-acre grass fire that was billowing smoke visible in Sacramento County.
Cal Fire officials say the Watt vegetation fire burned 50 acres near Watt Avenue and Walerga in Placer County. Firefighters initially responded to a vehicle fire that spread to nearby vegetation, according to the Cal Fire Protection Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit.
The Placer County Sheriff’s Office announced on its Twitter page at 5:45 p.m. Thursday that deputies were stopping traffic on Walerga from PFE Road to Doyle Ranch Drive; and along PFE from Watt Avenue to Walerga.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department received reports of smoke in northern Sacramento County. Soon after, the Fire Department announced on its Twitter page that the reported smoke was coming from the Placer County fire.
By 7:30 pm. Thursday, firefighters had 100 percent of the fire contained, Cal Fire reported. The flames did not damage any buildings. Sheriff’s officials lifted the evacuation orders and allowed residents to return to their homes.
