CHP motorcycle officer ‘stable’ but badly injured in DUI crash on I-80 in Sacramento

A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer suffered major injuries in a crash Wednesday night on Interstate 80 in Sacramento but is expected to survive, authorities say.

Officer Hector Arroyo was running a traffic break on eastbound I-80 near the Watt Avenue overcrossing shortly before 9 p.m. when his motorcycle was struck by a small Chevrolet pickup truck, CHP North Sacramento spokesman Officer A.J. McTaggart said..

First responders arrived and “immediately rushed” Arroyo to a hospital for what McTaggart described as “major” injuries, but Arroyo was “stable and alert” Thursday morning.

The pickup driver, identified as 36-year-old Ulises Emmanuel Briones-Rodriguez of Sacramento, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Officers arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

I-80 was closed for a few hours as the CHP investigated the crash and reopened before 2 a.m.
