Pedestrian killed by sheriff’s deputy’s patrol vehicle identified as Elk Grove man
A man fatally struck by a Sacramento County sheriff’s vehicle last week near Elk Grove has been identified by the coroner.
Rickey Epps, a 37-year-old Elk Grove resident, died early Friday morning following the incident last Thursday night on Franklin Boulevard near Core Road, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
A deputy who works at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center was driving a marked patrol vehicle northbound on Franklin Boulevard around 10:45 p.m. Thursday when the deputy hit a pedestrian, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said in a Saturday news release.
The Sheriff’s Office described the stretch of roadway as “foggy” and “rural,” according to the news release, and a pair of witnesses told sheriff’s officials that the victim was standing in the middle of the roadway facing away from oncoming traffic when he was struck.
Epps was taken to a hospital in critical condition late Thursday and died Friday afternoon, according to the Sheriff’s Office and coroner.
The involved deputy, who was not injured, has not been identified. The deputy’s administrative status is not known.
The California Highway Patrol, which has jurisdiction on the involved stretch of Franklin Boulevard, is investigating the deadly crash. The Sheriff’s Office will also conduct an internal investigation.
