With near-freezing temperatures expected, Sacramento to open temporary warming centers
With temperatures expected to reach the low 30s on Friday and Saturday night, Sacramento will be opening two overnight respite facilities for residents experiencing homelessness.
If you need a place to warm up on Friday and Saturday, you can go to one of the following centers:
City Hall Lobby, 915 I St., Sacramento
Hagginwood Community Center, at 3271 Marysville Blvd., Sacramento
Both facilities will be open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. There will be restrooms, blankets, food and water. Pets can be placed in a kennel or crate at a “protected outdoor space” at the center.
Officials will be monitoring weather conditions in the following days and may extend respite center hours if necessary.
The county will also be opening warming centers in anticipation of the cold weather.
- Creekside Adult School, 2641 Kent Drive, Sacramento (7 p.m. Friday through Sunday)
- DHA Annex, 1725 28th St., Sacramento (7 p.m. Friday through Sunday)
- Sacramento City Hall: 915 I St., Sacramento (8 p.m. – 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday)
- Hagginwood Community Center: 3217 Marysville Blvd., Sacramento (8 p.m. – 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday)
- United Methodist Church: 8986 Elk Grove Blvd., Elk Grove (8 p.m. – 6 a.m. Friday through Sunday)
- Union Gospel Mission: 400 Bannon St., Sacramento (10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Friday through Sunday)
Face coverings are required and will be provided to those that need one. All pets must have a leash or be in a carrier.
The Department of Human Assistance is also extending its weather respite motel voucher program to Monday.
In partnership with Sacramento County, Regional Transit will provide buses to make multiple trips for pick-up of passengers for the county warming center locations at Creekside Adult School and DHA Annex starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Passenger pick-up locations will be at the following RT bus stops: Stockton Boulevard and Fruitridge Road; Watt Avenue at Poplar Boulevard; Ahern Street at North C Street; and Natomas Park Drive (near Garden Highway).
There will also be transportation back to these locations Saturday morning from the warming center locations.

The low temperature in Sacramento Friday and Saturday night is expected to be 34 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
