MLK Day Sacramento event guide: Marches, virtual programs and Kings Week of Action

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is around the corner and several events in Sacramento are planned to honor the civil rights leader.

And in another pandemic year, you will have the option to join virtual events or in-person marches.

Virtual events

MLK365

Register online to join nonprofit organization MLK365 in honoring King’s legacy in the annual March for the Dream. Due to COVID-19, the event will be virtual this year.

When: Monday. Register for details.

UC Davis School of Law virtual MLK celebration

Register to virtually celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. in an annual event with speeches from Kevin Johnson, dean of the UC Davis School of Law, keynote speaker Sterling Anderson and more.

When: 12 p.m. Monday .

In-person events

MLK caravan and parade

1400 Grand Avenue – Grant Union High School

The Greater Sacramento NAACP and Black Lives Matter will honor King with a caravan starting at Grant High School, located in North Sacramento.

There will be decorated cars, floats, specialty cars, motorcycles, music and speeches as they travel throughout the city. There will also be pick up stops and vendors at Sacramento City College, Oak Park Community Center and Sacramento State University.

When: 8 a.m. to noon Monday.

Decorations start at 8 a.m. and the caravan starts at 9 a.m.

MLK Day Walk for Justice

California State Capitol Museum – 1315 10th St.

Join the Walk for Justice in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to bring awareness to those who’ve been wrongfully incarcerated.

After a rally, the march will be in front of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Office at the State Capitol Museum.

The route will encircle the capitol complex and the length of the route is approximately one mile.

When: From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday

Sacramento Kings Week of Action

Join the Sacramento Kings with an initiative to unite, inspire and call for racial equality and social justice.

During the week, the team will participate and facilitate community events like a basketball training clinic for children as well as host several conversations with members within the community.

When: Monday to Friday

2022 MLK Celebration Sacramento

Hosted by the MLK Celebration Committee, the annual MLK Celebration Sacramento is back.

Join the City of Sacramento at Sacramento State University for a night of celebration and education of King’s work.

Due to COVID-19, the event will be limited to 75 to 150 people. The event is in its 23rd year.
