First falcon hatchling emerges atop UC Davis Medical Center’s roof — how to see it online
The first peregrine falcon egg of the season recently hatched on the roof of UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, according to a Wednesday news release.
The egg began hatching Sunday, and it was discovered on Tuesday that one hatchling had fully emerged from its egg.
There are now 3 eggs left in the nest, which are expected to hatch sometime this week, according to UC Davis spokesman Liam Connolly.
The previously endangered birds made the roof of the health center their home in 2015, according to the UC Davis website. Hospital officials first started livestreaming the peregrine nest in 2019, which saw the successful hatching of four chicks.
Connolly said that many of the staff and interested members of the local community usually watch and enjoy the livestream. The video, available on the hospital’s website, usually begins when a falcon is spotted on the roof of the hospital around late February or March.
The livestream ends when there are no more falcons at the nest. Chicks will start flying away from their mother’s nest by mid-June, according to the livestream page.
