Sacramento man among two killed as train hits pickup truck in rural Yuba County

Roadway fatality

Two men were killed when a pickup truck attempting to navigate an uncontrolled railroad crossing was struck by a train Sunday afternoon in Yuba County.

A 39-year-old Sacramento man was riding in a black 2003 Chevrolet Silverado driven by another man around 1 p.m. on a private roadway near Highway 65 and Dairy Road, the California Highway Patrol’s Yuba-Sutter office said in a news release.

The vehicle, heading eastbound, attempted to cross the tracks “directly in front of a locomotive traveling northbound,” CHP officials wrote.

“As the Chevrolet Silverado began crossing the railroad tracks, the locomotive engineer honked the horn numerous times to no avail. The locomotive then collided with the right side of the Chevrolet Silverado.”

The passenger and the driver, identified in the CHP collision report as a “John Doe” of unknown age, both died at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation. The deceased victims’ identities will be released by coroner’s officials with the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office’s pending notification of family.

The area of the crash is a rural stretch of Yuba County located between Wheatland and Olivehurst. The private roadway connects Highway 65 to several nearby farms.
