Two dead, two seriously injured after single-car rollover on I-5 in Sacramento County

Roadway fatality

Two men were killed and two other men taken to hospitals with major injuries after a single-vehicle crash early Tuesday morning on Interstate 5 in Sacramento County, authorities said.

A 2006 Toyota Camry was heading north on I-5 near Hood Franklin Road around 12:15 a.m. at about 70 mph when the driver lost control and swerved off the shoulder, sending the vehicle overturning multiple times and “cartwheeling” at least once, the California Highway Patrol’s South Sacramento office said in a news release.

The driver, a 21-year-old Elk Grove man, was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, CHP officials said. The right rear passenger, a 20-year-old Stockton man who was ejected from the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene by Cosumnes CSD Fire Department personnel.

The deceased passenger was identified Wednesday by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as Muhammad Suleman. The driver’s identity has not yet been released.

The front passenger was also ejected from the Toyota, according to the CHP news release. The left rear passenger, the only occupant not ejected, crawled out of the vehicle and called 911. No other witnesses reported seeing the crash, according to the CHP.

The two surviving occupants, an Isleton man and a Stockton man who are both 23 years old, gave statements to CHP officers and were taken to hospitals with injuries described as major.

“Upon inspection of the occupant restraint system, it is obvious that no seat belts were worn,” CHP investigators wrote.

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash, authorities said.

The crash happened amid rainy conditions, and according to the CHP’s crash report, the driver is believed to have overcorrected after losing traction on the wet roadway.
