A Sacramento County woman was arrested on suspicion of DUI following a single-vehicle crash near South Lake Tahoe that killed her passenger over the weekend, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A silver Honda CR-V heading northbound on Pioneer Trail near Golden Bear Trail overturned and ended up in an embankment on the other side of traffic shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday, the CHP’s South Lake Tahoe office said in a Tuesday news release. The vehicle ended up on its roof.
The driver, identified by the CHP as 26-year-old Diana Shemyakina of Antelope, suffered major injuries. A 34-year-old South Lake Tahoe man riding in the front passenger seat died at the scene, authorities said.
Shemyakina showed signs of alcohol intoxication and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the CHP news release. She was taken to a hospital for treatment of her injuries.
The deceased victim will be identified by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office pending notification of family.
