Gunfire erupts at Sacramento vigil for man killed in shooting at South Natomas sports bar
A dispute Monday night during a homicide victim’s memorial vigil in Sacramento led to gunfire not far from the South Natomas sports bar where the deadly shooting occurred three weeks ago.
People had gathered to remember and honor Nicholas Deshawn Snead, 38, of Sacramento, who was killed in the Sept. 13 shooting inside the Cheers Bar and Grill located within the Park Plaza shopping center on the corner of West El Camino and Truxel Road.
Another man was struck by gunfire and wounded in last month’s shooting. Police said that man suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The department has not released any suspect information in the incident.
Monday’s vigil for Snead was held in the small shopping center’s parking lot at 1620 West El Camino Avenue.
About 7:15 p.m., officers received a report of a shooting where the memorial event was being held, according to the Sacramento Police Department.
Police said some type of disturbance occurred among a large group of people during which a gun was fired. Officers found evidence of a shooting at the scene, but no injuries or damage was reported.
Investigators canvassed the area for evidence and witnesses. Police said the investigation into the circumstances of the shooting remains active.
Berry Accius, a community activist for Voice of the Youth, said of the vigil “emotions were high (and) things got out of hand.” Accius said he believes the gunshots Monday night had been fired into the air in an attempt to disperse the crowd.
