A 5-year-old girl from Northern California died Tuesday afternoon at a Sacramento hospital after suffering serious injuries that morning in a crash in rural Nevada County, California Highway Patrol officials said.

A 1993 Toyota pickup truck overturned around 9:10 a.m. after veering off Tyler Foote Road, north of Nevada City and east of Sebastopol, the CHP’s Grass Valley office said in a news release.

Arriving fire personnel had to extricate a 5-year-old passenger from the vehicle and perform CPR, according to the news release. She was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Sacramento, where CHP officials said she was listed in “critical condition.”

The CHP in an update Tuesday evening said the child died at the hospital shortly after 2 p.m. Her identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.

The driver, a 32-year-old Nevada City man, was able to remove himself from the vehicle with injuries described as minor.

CHP officers determined the Toyota driver drifted off the roadway for unknown reasons, leading the vehicle down a hillside embankment and into a pine tree, according to the news release, causing the pickup truck to overturn.

The crash remains under investigation, but drugs and alcohol are not suspected as factors, CHP officials wrote. No arrests have been made.

Both the man and girl were wearing seat belts, according to the news release.
