Man shot by Sacramento cops at Elk Grove apartment complex recovering as police probe continues

The man shot Tuesday by Sacramento police at an Elk Grove apartment complex remained in custody Wednesday while he recovered from his wounds.

Sacramento police were seeking Terry Sharp, 32, on an Orange County felony fraud warrant and as a person of interest in a Sacramento assault when officers saw him in the parking lot of Bella Vista Apartments on Di Lusso Drive just after noon Tuesday.

Detectives who tried to arrest Sharp said the man was holding a firearm. The two detectives shot Sharp when he refused their demands to drop the weapon, police said Wednesday. Sacramento police on Tuesday said Sharp was in serious condition at an area hospital, but did not provide an update on his condition Wednesday. The two detectives were not injured.

Officers later recovered the weapon.

Elk Grove police and Sacramento police investigators are investigating the incident. Sacramento’s Office of Public Safety Accountability and Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office are monitoring the investigation. Sacramento police on Wednesday did not say whether the detectives would remain on duty during the investigation and referred questions on the shooting probe to Elk Grove authorities.

Sacramento and Elk Grove police swarmed the complex near Bruceville Road Tuesday afternoon as dozens of residents waited outside the entrance waiting to be allowed to return to their homes.

Sacramento police told reporters Tuesday that they commonly talk with neighboring police when they cross into another city’s jurisdiction.

“As a common practice, we communicate with our outside law enforcement agencies to let them know that we’re in their area,” said Sacramento police spokesman Sgt. Zach Eaton, though he said he did not have specifics about that communication in Sharp’s case. “It’s not unusual for our officers to go to neighboring agencies to locate suspects.”

Eaton said it was unclear whether Sharp lived at the Elk Grove apartments but neighbors said the man was a common sight around the complex where he would feed the building’s cats. Neighbors also said police officers were seen around the apartments in recent days, apparently looking for the man.

“He feeds cats around here. Everyone knows him from feeding cats,” neighbor Isaiah Thomas. “Recently, we’ve seen a lot of cops around. We’ve seen a lot of cops stalking around, looking for him.”
