Police tape at crime scene

A 64-year-old man was struck by a vehicle and died Saturday morning along Highway 99 in south Sacramento, according to the California Highway Patrol.

About 5 a.m., the man, from Ohio, was riding his Giant-brand bicycle from the right shoulder of the southbound lane, going east onto the roadway north of the Bruceville Road on-ramp.

A Mazda driven by a Sacramento man, 58, struck him, the CHP said in a news release.

Investigators said the preliminary investigation indicated the Mazda was in the No. 4 lane when the driver reported hitting an “unknown object,” causing moderate damage to the front end and driver side of the vehicle. The driver pulled over to call 911.

Fire crews responded and determined the bicyclist had been hit and wound up in the center median north of Mack Road and dying of his injuries, the CHP said.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, according to the CHP. Alcohol and drugs have been ruled out as being involved in the crash.
