Pedestrian killed after walking into traffic on Highway 50 in Rancho Cordova, CHP says

Pedestrian fatality

An Elk Grove man was killed Monday evening after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 50 in Rancho Cordova, authorities said.

The crash happened just before 7:15 p.m. when a red Toyota struck a pedestrian on eastbound Highway 50 near Zinfandel Drive, CHP East Sacramento spokesman Officer Josh Sherwood said.

The pedestrian was outside of a vehicle that had pulled over onto the right shoulder of eastbound Highway 50 when he walked into lanes of traffic and was hit by the Toyota, Sherwood said.

The victim was identified Tuesday by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as Nathaniel Byrd, 20, of Elk Grove.

Byrd was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead later Monday evening, Sherwood said.

The incident remains under investigation by the CHP.
