Were those illegal fireworks? Here’s what Sacramento law says — and how to report the blasts
With July 4 approaching, it might be tempting to shoot off fireworks from your Sacramento home. But before you let your rockets burst, make sure you’re not breaking the law.
The city and county have several rules on fireworks to keep people safe and prevent fires. In Sacramento County, if you’re found violating these regulations, you’ll be fined.
For the first violation, it starts at $1,000. Then, it will increase to $2,500 for the second violation within one year of the first time and $5,000 for each additional violation. It’s a $10,000 fine for each violation that happens within the American River Parkway.
Here’s what to know:
Safe and Sane fireworks
Throughout California, legal fireworks are called “Safe and Sane” fireworks and they are identified with the State Fire Marshall’s seal, according to a fact sheet from Metro Fire Sacramento.
Any firework that blasts into the air or explodes is considered illegal.
Designated firework time
In Sacramento County, Safe and sane fireworks can only be used and sold from noon June 28 to midnight July 4, according to a fact sheet.
If you’re in the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County, it’s illegal to use, have or sell safe and sane fireworks anytime except from noon June 28 to 10 p.m. July 5, Metro Fire outlined.
Age limits
Fireworks are for adults.
According to Metro Fire, it’s illegal for anyone under 18 years old to buy, use or have possession of fireworks.
Other counties
Other counties may have other rules regarding fireworks, so be sure to check your local guidelines.
For example:
- Placer County: All fireworks, including safe and sane ones, are not permitted in unincorporated areas of Placer County, according to its website. There is an exception if you get it approved by the county or state fire marshal. Roseville and Rocklin residents, however, can fire off safe and sane fireworks.
- El Dorado County: All fireworks, including safe and sane fireworks, are banned in El Dorado County, according to the county’s fire district.
- Yolo County: Davis does not allow the use or discharge of fireworks. West Sacramento allows the use of safe and sane fireworks from noon on June 28 until noon on July 6.
