Pay with your palm? Three Sacramento-area grocery stores use new Amazon technology
Sacramento-area Whole Foods shoppers can now check out with a scan of their palm — courtesy of Amazon technology being rolled out nationwide.
The technology company, which acquired Whole Foods in 2017, is rolling out its Amazon One palm recognition feature at all grocery locations in the United States by the end of 2023, according to a June news release.
Palm-scanning is currently available at 200 Whole Foods locations — including some in Sacramento.
How does Amazon palm scan work?
The technology “captures the minute characteristics of your palm” from the lines to the pattern of your veins, according to Amazon. This creates your unique “palm signature” that is then associated with your account.
Anyone who shops at Whole Foods can sign up to be an Amazon One member by enrolling online or in-store. All shoppers need to do is create a free profile online where they will link either their credit or debit card to their account, then scan their palm.
Amazon Prime members can link their profile to their Amazon One account to get automatic savings at check-out.
Other businesses are also implementing the palm scanning technology, including Panera Bread, select sporting fields and airports.
