Pedestrian dies after a Union Pacific freight train struck him near North Highlands overpass

Pedestrian fatality

Authorities were investigating a fatal collision Wednesday evening in Sacramento County after a Union Pacific freight train struck a pedestrian in North Highlands.

The collision was reported about 4:30 p.m. near Walerga and Roseville roads, said Battalion Chief Parker Wilbourn, a spokesman for the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District. The railroad in that area runs alongside Roseville Road and under the Walerga Road overpass.

He confirmed the pedestrian was pronounced dead, but he did not have any further details about the person who died.

Margaret Ronspies, a Union Pacific Railroad spokesperson, confirmed the train fatally struck the pedestrian in North Highlands. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office and Union Pacific officials are investigating the collision.

Ronspies said a deputy at the scene reported that the pedestrian killed in the collision was a man.
