When will Amazon Fresh open in Sacramento area? Start date announced for first local store

After a year of stalled expansion plans, Amazon is opening its first high-tech grocery store in Northern California.

Amazon Fresh will open at 6780 Stanford Ranch Road in the Roseville in August, the tech company confirmed in a Thursday news release.

It’ll be the chain’s first location in Northern California.

The 42,000-square-foot supermarket will give customers access to regular grocery items as well as Amazon-specific brands such as Aplenty and 365 by Whole Foods Market, the release said.

“Our goal is to deliver the best selection, value and convenience to customers when it comes to grocery shopping,” Amazon said in the release.

“All customers who shop Amazon Fresh Roseville can save up to 30% on 4,000 weekly rotating grocery items across the aisles both in-store and online — every day,” the release said.

Similar to standard supermarkets, Amazon Fresh sells an assortment of produce, meat, seafood and prepared meals made daily in its kitchen.

When will Amazon Fresh open in Roseville?

Described as a “new, affordable grocery store,” Amazon Fresh Roseville will open on Thursday, Aug. 22, with quality grocery items and a convenient shopping format.

The store’s open hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.

Why was Sacramento-area grocery store delayed?

Brick-and-mortar Amazon Fresh sites were originally slated to open in 2023 at the Ridege Shopping Center in Elk Grove, followed by stores in the Country Club Centre in Arden Arcade and on Stanford Ranch Road.

Announcements of those plans came amid the tech giant’s push to grow in the physical retail world, ranging from the purchase of Whole Foods to the rapid expansion of Amazon Fresh and Go convenience stores.

Then those efforts came to a halt.

“We remain committed to grocery, and will selectively open new Amazon Fresh stores as we see positive customer feedback on the new format,” Amazon wrote in a news release Thursday, announcing the opening of its first Northern California site.

Development efforts resumed in recent months, with Amazon eyeing a different location at the Sunrise Village shopping center in Citrus Heights, the Sacramento Bee reported previously.

Amazon spokesman Griffin Buch told The Bee via email on Thursday morning that the tech company is “bringing an Amazon Fresh to Elk Grove.”

However, he was tight-lipped about when that might happen.

What is Amazon Fresh?

Amazon Fresh is an online and physical supermarket, according to its site.

Marketed as a low-price destination for everyday items, the high-tech grocer also offers same-day delivery and free pickup.

In-store, customers can use an Amazon Dash Cart that uses computer vision algorithms and sensor fusion to identify items in the cart, according to the company’s site.

When you’re finished shopping, exit through the store’s Amazon Dash Cart lane and a receipt will be sent to your mobile device.

Amazon Fresh has more than 40 stores across the country.

It has 18 stores in California, including Irvine, North Hollywood and Pasadena.
