A new Topgolf location is coming to Sacramento, city leader says. Here’s what we know so far

Topgolf is planning a new location in South Natomas, a city leader announced Monday.

“I’m thrilled to share my enthusiasm that Topgolf is in the early stages of bringing its first Sacramento facility to South Natomas!” Sacramento City Councilwoman Karina Talamantes, who represents the district, wrote on Facebook.

Talamantes said the new facility will be 58,000 square feet, generate more than 250 jobs and contribute roughly $15 million in economic growth to the area. The planning has been years in the making, she said, although she did not announce where specifically it would be located nor when it will open.

Topgolf is a popular chain of multiple-story golf driving ranges that feature tracking technology allowing patrons to play games while aiming at targets. The business also serves bar fare and has a range of cocktails and beers on tap.

The new facility will feature 80 bays and is expected to host 250,000 customers each year. Talamantes said there will be an open house Aug. 21 allowing locals to learn about the project and ask questions.

It would be Sacramento’s second Topgolf in the region, joining the facility built in Roseville in 2016. The Roseville location is roughly 23 miles north of downtown Sacramento, about a half-hour drive in light traffic.

Topgolf has roughly 80 locations worldwide including Australia, China, Germany, Mexico, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. There are currently four Topgolfs in California — in Ontario, El Segundo, Roseville and San Jose, the last of which opened 2021. Another new location is being built in Burlingame to serve the San Francisco area.

Golf’s popularity has spiked since the pandemic and the local golf scene in Sacramento has reacted accordingly. Morton Golf, which oversees public courses in the region including Haggin Oaks, Bing Maloney and Land Park, has invested heavily in its courses and driving ranges since the pandemic.

Haggin Oaks and Bing Maloney added “Top Tracer” technology to their driving ranges in 2021 and this year, respectively, while Land Park is undergoing a long-term restoration project that was announced in June to celebrate the nine-hole course’s 100-year anniversary.
