Sacramento-area Mexican restaurant closes after ’10 wonderful years.’ Here’s why

A popular Sacramento-area Mexican restaurant has closed its doors after a decade.

“It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing the closing” of Las Brasas Tacos & Salsas, 537B Main St. in downtown Woodland, restaurant representatives announced in a Facebook post on Monday, Sept. 23

“It has been a wonderful 10 years owning and operating this location, serving the community and watching our downtown grow,” they wrote in the post. “We have been fortunate enough to be a large part of that growth and community and will miss being a part of the day-to-day activities on Main Street.”

Why did Sacramento-area Mexican restaurant close?

On Facebook, restaurant representatives cited “rising costs of our core products, poor broad economic conditions and challenges produced by unfair competition within our city limits” as key reasons behind the closure.

As of 2022, Las Brasas Tacos & Salsa was one of 15 Mexican restaurants and food carts lining Main Street in Woodland, The Sacramento Bee previously reported.

The Yolo County city is known for having some of the best Mexican food in the Sacramento area, according to The Bee’s archives.

Customers react to Woodland eatery’s closure

Customers reacted to news of the closure on social media — calling it “heartbreaking” and “so, so sad.”

“This is a big loss for this city,” Facebook user Noe Lopez wrote in a comment on Las Brasas Tacos & Salsas’ Facebook post, calling it “one of our favorite spots to eat.”

“Oh nooooo!!” Melissa Hager commented on Facebook, describing the restaurant’s menu as the “best Mexican food in town.” “I am so bummed!!!”

Some commenters blamed the popularity of pop-up restaurants and street vendors for contributing to the restaurant’s demise.

“It really is sad to see another business shut down,” Facebook user Da Tiger Paul wrote. “It could have been avoided.”

Will sister restaurant in Woodland stay open?

In light of the closure, Las Brasas Tacos & Salsas said it will shift its focus to off-site catering and event planning, “utilizing everything we have learned over the past decade to provide a one-stop shop for all event and catering needs.”

A sister restaurant, Las Brasas Express, will continue to operate at Woodland Community & Senior Center, 2001 East St. in Woodland.

“Although our business will carry on in a different location, we will miss all of the amazing people we have met on this journey on Main Street,” Las Brasas Tacos & Salsas said. “The memories will be cherished forever.”
