Divers recover body of man who went missing when canoe capsized in Donner Lake

Drowning incident depicts emergency personnel at water canal

The body of a man who disappeared Wednesday when his canoe capsized in the waters of Donner Lake was recovered by divers over the weekend after a three-day search.

Truckee police announced the somber find Sunday.

“Our greatest sympathies remain with the family and friends of the victim during this time,” police officials said in a statement.

Rescuers rushed to the mountain lake about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday after numerous calls to emergency dispatchers of a canoe carrying two men that overturned in the middle of the lake.

A nearby windsurfer was able to pull one of the men from the water to safety, but the second man went underwater. Neither of the men appeared to have been wearing life jackets, Truckee police said.

Sheriff’s teams including units from Placer, Nevada, Sacramento, Yolo and Yuba counties and a host of local agencies swarmed the lake for days in the search effort, joined in the air by California Highway Patrol and Calstar helicopters, before recovering the missing man.
