A gas leak in Folsom on Wednesday caused residents to temporarily evacuate and a nearby elementary school to briefly shelter in place, firefighters said.

Residents living on Kerslake Circle and Walden Drive, just west of the Palladio Shopping Center and Kaiser Permanente Folsom Medical Center, were evacuated by Folsom police after a private construction company severed a 2-inch gas line about 11 a.m.

Authorities and PG&E crews responded quickly, said Assistant Chief Chad Wilson, a spokesman for the Folsom Fire Department, and found and closed off the severed line within 15 minutes. Gold Ridge Elementary, just west of where the leak occurred sheltered in place out of an “abundance of caution,” Wilson said, while there was no report of gas leaking on school grounds.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes just before noon and the shelter in place at Gold Ridge Elementary was lifted, Wilson said.
