4 Sacramento-area cities are celebrating Veterans Day with parades. Which roads will close?
Veterans Day is being celebrated throughout the Greater Sacramento region with parades in different sectors.
According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, the holiday originated during World War I after the Allied nations and Germany temporarily agreed to stop fighting on Nov. 11, 1918. Seven months later, the war officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919.
Veterans Day is a day of celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good, the Department of Veteran Affairs.
In celebration of the country’s current and former military servants, there are parades happening in surrounding cities throughout Sacramento and Yolo counties.
These Sacramento-area cities are hosting events on Monday that could include street closures and detours:
When and where is Elk Grove Veterans Day parade?
Elk Grove’s Veterans Day Veterans Day parade beginning at 11:11 a.m.
The parade starts at the Cosumnes Community Services District Administration Building at 8820 Elk Grove Blvd.
The parade route will travel east on Elk Grove Boulevard, then turn right and head south along Elk Grove-Florin Road.
The parade will end after making a right turn into Elk Grove Park.
Which roads will be closed?
There will be street closures and detours throughout Elk Grove due to the Veterans Day event.
According to a city news release, Elk Grove Boulevard will be closed to all eastbound and westbound traffic from Williamson Drive to Elk Grove-Florin Road.
Additionally, traffic from Colton will be directed westbound on Elk Grove Boulevard to northbound Williamson, the release said.
Elk Grove-Florin Road will be closed to all southbound traffic from Sierra Street to Park Meadows. All intersecting roads will be blocked.
Where are detours?
Vehicles traveling eastbound on Elk Grove Boulevard, approaching Williamson Drive, will be rerouted to the north.
Drivers going westbound on Elk Grove Boulevard, approaching Elk Grove-Florin Road, can take a detour northbound to Elk Grove-Florin Road.
Commuters coming southbound on Elk Grove Florin Road will have to go eastbound on Sierra Street.
All northbound traffic on Elk Grove Florin Road approaching the entrance to Elk Grove Park entrance flagged to go eastbound to Park Meadows.
Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes throughout the city. Those traveling east or westbound in Elk Grove should use Bond, Sheldon or Grant Line andKammerer Roads as alternate routes during the closure.
When does Folsom Veterans Day Parade start?
Folsom is hosting its 24th annual Wayne Spence Folsom Veterans Day Parade on Monday, starting at 9 a.m.
More than 2,000 participants are expected to take part in the 2024 parade, which features floats, classic cars, horseback riders, color guards and a variety of community groups.
Although it’s expected to rain in parts of the Sacramento area on Monday, the Folsom event will continue rain or shine, the city’s website said.
Where is the parade route?
According to the city, the parade will begin on East Bidwell Street near Montrose Drive.
The route travels westbound on East Bidwell Street, northbound on Coloma Street and will proceed to Natoma Street, the city’s website said.
The event will conclude with a brief ceremony to honor local veterans at the Veterans Memorial in City Lions Park.
Which streets will be closed in Folsom?
The Folsom Police Department will coordinate a temporary closure of all lanes of traffic on East Bidwell Street from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Natoma Street from Coloma Street to Wales Drive will close from approximately 9:15 to 11:15 a.m.
Closures will be lifted immediately after the parade ends, the city said.
There will be marked detours around the parade; motorists are encouraged to take Riley and School streets as alternate routes.
When and where is Sacramento Veterans Day Parade?
The Veterans Affiliated Council is holding its Veterans Day Parade in the heart of downtown Sacramento on Monday.
The event will include marching the streets around the State Capitol building, a parade of old school cars and motorcycles and a ceremony featuring guest speakers that represent military veterans and government officials.
Pedestrians and horse riders will lead the parade onto Capitol Mall, and vehicles will follow shortly after.
The parade route begins west on Capitol Mall, heads east back to 10th Street.
Then the route loops down Capitol Mall making a right on Ninth Street, takes a left on N Street and concludes with a left on 10th Street.
What’s planned in West Sacramento for the holiday?
The city of West Sacramento is hosting a Veterans Day parade that starts at 11 a.m. Monday at 1100 Clarendon St.
The parade will then go to West Acre Road and end at Park and Stone Boulevard, according to the West Sacramento Veterans of Foreign Wars website.
Following the parade, there will be the Heroes Lunch at 905 Drever St. with free meals served to veterans with an ID, accompanied by soothing jazz tunes.
Plates will be available to the public for $12.
