A pedestrian died after being hit by a Union Pacific train near Florin Road in south Sacramento on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident took place near Florin Road between McComber Street on the east and Reese Road on the west at roughly 4:10 p.m., Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District spokesman Battalion Chief Chris Vestal said. Those roads were expected to remain closed in that area for the foreseeable future, authorities said.

Metro Fire responded to the scene, and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office took over investigating the incident, Vestal said.

Union Pacific runs freight trains through the Union Pacific Railroad, which operates on routes in 23 states, including California.
