72-year-old inmate collapses, dies at Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center, Sacramento sheriff says

Bars from a jail cell frame a door being locked.

A 72-year-old inmate collapsed and died Sunday inside Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said.

The man was inside the center’s 448-North Medical Corridor near the Joseph Kievernagel Facility when officials said he suffered a medical emergency. Paramedics were called to the facility on the 12500 block of Bruceville Road just after 8 p.m.

Deputies attempted to revive the man before Cosumnes Community Service District Fire Department responders arrived at the center south of Elk Grove. Neither were successful and the man was pronounced dead.

Sacramento County sheriff’s officials said it would investigate the man’s death. The county Coroner’s Office will determine the cause. The man’s name has not yet been released.

This is the second death of an inmate at RCCC this year after Juan Angel Rodriguez, 41, died in July.
