Grass Valley woman, 34, killed trying to cross I-80 near Auburn, closing section of interstate
A Grass Valley woman was struck by a car and killed late Thursday while trying to cross Interstate 80 near Auburn, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Highway Patrol officials say the woman, 34, was walking along the westbound interstate about 10:14 p.m. Thursday. She was fatally struck by the driver of a Nissan Versa as she crossed onto eastbound I-80 near Russell Road.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was not hurt and cooperated with officers. Neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected to be factors in the fatal collision, said CHP officials.
Patrol officials extended condolences in a statement, saying the incident “serves as a somber reminder of the dangers pedestrians face on high-speed roadways.”
The wreck and investigation into the incident closed the eastbound interstate for about two hours.
The highway patrol diverted traffic onto Russell Road to reenter the interstate at Foresthill Road until lanes were reopened early Friday, said CHP officials.
