Acommunity candlelight vigil for survivors and victims of the Feather River Adventist School on Friday at 5:15 p.m. in downtown Oroville.
On Wednesday, a gunman opened fire at the Northern California school, injuring two students. The victims, 5- and 6-year-old kindergarten boys, are in critical condition. Their families are raising money to cover hospital costs and other expenses.
The church plans to hold the prayer vigil in front of the town’s Christmas tree near the Oroville Convention Center, according to the Oroville Church of the Nazarene. The vigil is being organized by Stephanie Reynolds Bever, a community member.
“After the tragic school shooting in our community yesterday, we are joining in a community candlelight prayer vigil to join together in unity, praying for the boys and their families, along with all in the school and community affected,” the church wrote online Thursday.
Residents are asked to bring their own candles or use their phones as lights.
Feather River Adventist School, located two miles southwest of the small town of Palermo in southern Butte County, is a K-8 campus run by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Like the town, Feather River Adventist is small, with around 37 students, according to the state Department of Education.
The alleged gunman, who was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, was identified by Butte County Sheriff’s officials on Thursday.
