The Front Street Animal Shelter in Old Sacramento is offering free animal adoptions until Dec. 31 as a part of its “Home for the Holidays campaign.”

Located at 2127 Front St., the Front Street Animal Shelter is operated by the city of Sacramento and is creating this campaign to reduce kennel overcrowding.

“We know there’s a lot of people out there this time of year that think about growing their families and bringing a pet home,” Hinderman said. “We wanted to do something to not only help the animals, but also help our community members get a new pet into their lives.”

The shelter is 200% over capacity. Phillip Zimmerman, the manager of Front Street Animal Shelter, described the capacity as “extremely full.” For example, the shelter operates on a one dog per kennel basis and has 99 kennels. Currently, the shelter has between 150 to 200 dogs.

“That’s the kind of situation we found ourselves in,” said Ryan Hinderman, a spokesperson for the shelter. “Our dream would be for as many animals as possible to find families, especially in time for the holidays.”

The Front Street Animal primarily has cats and dogs, who, for no charge, are already spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. At a private clinic, those services would cost about $1,000, according to Front Street Animal Shelter.

Front Street Animal Shelter often sees an uptick of animals entering their facilities around this time, Hinderman added. Staff are unsure why, but encouraged Sacramento families to take a furry friend home this holiday season.

“When someone adopts an animal, they truly are saving a life,” Zimmerman said. “We are in dire need of animal lovers to come to the rescue, and know how much joy these animals will bring to their adopters’ lives as well.”

Front Street Animal Shelter is open from noon to 5 p.m. seven days a week with no appointment necessary.
