Sacramento County has closed Discovery Park and a number of boat launches ahead of anticipated flooding from weekend storms.

Discovery Park on the American River, the Howe Avenue Access, Watt Avenue Access and Gristmill Access along the American River Parkway; and the Elkhorn Boat Launch along the Sacramento River were closed Monday as weekend storms caused river and creek levels to rise.

More precipitation through the week is expected from new storms. The National Weather Service forecast predicts 2 to 3 inches of rain to fall on the capital region through Wednesday with higher amounts in the foothills that feed the American.

Both the Sacramento and American rivers are expected to remain below flood stages, according to the California-Nevada River Forecast Center, though both rivers have seen increased flows.

On Monday morning, the Sacramento River at I Street just below the confluence was running at 40,423 cfs and nearly 15 feet, which is 12½ feet below “monitor” stage. Forecasters say the river could rise as high as 25 feet by mid-week. On the American River, according to county gauges, the river below Nimbus Dam is running at 5,400 cfs and 8½ feet; the river is at 18.35 feet at the H Street Bridge as of Monday morning, well below “monitor” stage of 39 feet.

Sacramento County Regional Parks officials have not said when the park and boat launches would reopen.
