Driver facing DUI charges in hit-and-run that killed pedestrian, Sacramento police say
Sacramento police arrested the alleged driver in a fatal hit-and-run early Tuesday in the River Gardens neighborhood of North Sacramento.
The 34-year-old man was booked into Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run resulting in death and driving under the influence, Sacramento Police Department said in a Tuesday afternoon news release. The suspect is being held on the charges in lieu of $75,000 bail, jail records show. A Thursday arraignment is scheduled in Sacramento Superior Court.
Officers responded shortly after midnight to a report of a man down in the roadway at Northgate Boulevard near the Arden Garden Connector, police said in a statement. Emergency responders treated the man at the scene before transporting him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Sacramento County Coroner’s Office was expected to identify the man once family members were notified.
Police say the driver left the scene before officers arrived but later returned. What led to the crash was not known. Police in their initial statement said officers were “actively working through that portion of the investigation.” Police officials in the afternoon statement said officers found that the suspect was driving under the influence.
Sacramento police are asking for help from potential witnesses, who can call the department at 916-808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357.
