A’s home opener in West Sacramento could have a wet start. Will there be a rainout?

If you’re heading to the Athletics home opener, don’t forget your poncho.

The A’s first home game at Sutter Health Park is on Monday, March 31 at 7:05 p.m. against the Chicago Cubs. There are two more games scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The National Weather Service’s forecast for the Sacramento area shows chances of rain throughout Monday, including right before the first pitch.

Though there is rain expected throughout the three-day home series, meteorologist Bill Rasch, with the weather service’s Sacramento office, said it will likely remain light.

“(This is) just kind of a run-of-the-mill atmospheric river ... where we’ll have off-and-on rain in the first part of the week,” Rasch said.

Here’s what to know if you’re heading to the ballpark:

What does the forecast show for A’s game in West Sacramento?

According to Rasch, there is a 60% chance of rain in the area on Monday.

Rainfall is expected at times between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m., according to the Sacramento area forecast.

“It’s gonna be (a wet game),” Rasch said.

The local forecast for Sacramento indicates there could be showers during the other two A’s games against the Cubs on Tuesday and Wednesday.

However, Rasch said there should be no more than a quarter-inch of rain between Monday and Wednesday.

The high temperature on Monday was forecast at around 63 degrees with a low near 46 degrees, according to the weather service.

High temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday are predicted to stay in the low 60’s, according to the weather service.

Could the A’s-Cubs game get rained out?

Rasch said he does not think there will be enough rain for the game to be delayed or postponed.

“It doesn’t look like it’s going to be any really, really heavy downpours or anything like that,” he said.

The Athletics told The Sacramento Bee in an emailed statement on Thursday evening that the team is “excited to welcome fans to our ballpark in West Sacramento on Monday for our home opener.”

“While the current forecast indicates a chance of light showers during the day, our goal is always to play,” according to the statement. “We will keep fans updated with timely communications if weather impacts the game. We can’t wait to share this special day with fans and look forward to the season ahead.”

Rainouts at the A’s former home, the Oakland Coliseum, were rare.

The last time an A’s home game was postponed for rain was in April 2017, against the Houston Astros.

There was only one other home rainout in the 21st century in Oakland: An April 2014 game against the then-Cleveland Indians.

Until the 2014 rainout, the last time the A’s had been rained out was in 1998, according to CBS Sports.

According to the A’s website, the home team has “the right” to postpone a game due to inclement weather.

However, once the game starts, the decision to delay, postpone, or suspend is up to the Umpire-in-Chief in charge of on-field operations.

Once a game has started, the Umpire-in-Chief determines whether it should be suspended, when it can be resumed, or terminated because of bad weather or unfit playing conditions.

Can I get a refund for tickets if the A’s game is postponed?

According to the Athletics ticket terms, if a game is rained out, your ticket is valid for the date it is rescheduled.

If the game your ticket is good for is canceled or cannot be rescheduled, the ticket will be honored at a make-up game.
