CVS is closing another Sacramento-area drugstore. Here’s when and where
The Sacramento area is losing another CVS Pharmacy location.
The drugstore will shut its doors at 8585 Elk Grove Blvd. in Elk Grove in the spring.
“We’ve made the difficult decision to close our store,” Kara Page, manager of communications for CVS Health, told The Sacramento Bee in an email.
News of the closure comes about a year after two other CVS Pharmacy locations shut their doors in the Sacramento area.
CVS Pharmacy at the Arden Watt Marketplace shopping center sealed its doors in January 2024, and a CVS Pharmacy store inside Target in midtown Sacramento closed the following month, according to The Bee’s previous reporting.

What is CVS Health?
The first Consumer Value Store opened in 1963 in Lowell, Massachusetts, according to the CVS Health website. The company changed its name to CVS a year later.
The pharmaceutical chain now has more than 9,000 pharmacy locations, the website said, noting that 85% of Americans live within five miles of a CVS Pharmacy store.
According to Statista, CVS Pharmacy was one of the largest pharmacy companies in the United States in 2024, based on prescription drugs market share, surpassing rivals Walgreens Boots Alliance, Walmart and Rite Aid Corp.
Where is store closing in Sacramento area?
CVS Pharmacy is closing its store at the Elk Grove Village shopping center.
The drugstore is between an Ashlyn Furniture store and Patty’s Pizza Shack restaurant.
When is the last day for Elk Grove location?
CVS is set to close the Elk Grove Boulevard store on Thursday, May 8, according to Page.
All employees at the location are being offered comparable roles within the company, Page said.
“We have four CVS Pharmacy locations remaining in Elk Grove and our teams will continue to provide the community with outstanding service at these locations,” she said.
What will happen to my prescriptions?
All prescriptions will be transferred to a nearby CVS Pharmacy store, 9285 Elk Grove Blvd. in Elk Grove, to ensure that patients continue to have uninterrupted access to pharmacy care, Page said.
CVS Pharmacy patients can choose to fill their prescriptions at any CVS Pharmacy location, or another pharmacy of their choice if it’s more convenient, Page said.
Why is the Elk Grove CVS location closing?
In 2021, CVS announced plans to close nearly 900 stores from 2022 to 2024, deciding which locations to target based on “local market dynamics, population shifts and store density,” USA Today reported at the time.
The retailer shut roughly 300 stores in 2024, including dozens of pharmacies at Target locations, Yahoo! Finance reported.
“Store closure decisions are based on several factors, including population shifts, consumer buying patterns, store and pharmacy density, pharmacy care access and community health needs,” Page told The Bee. “We’re focused on ensuring we have the right kinds of stores and the right number of stores in the right locations.”
A number of nationwide pharmacy chains have announced store closures in the Sacramento area in recent years.
In March, Walgreens confirmed that it was closing a Carmichael location in April after shutting at least six Sacramento-area stores in 2024, according to The Bee’s archives.
Rite Aid announced plans to close nearly a dozen stores in the Sacramento region and Lake Tahoe area, The Bee reported in 2024.
