Trade guns for $100 and $50 gift cards at Yolo sheriff buyback event in Davis

The Yolo County Sheriff’s Office will offer residents a chance to turn in their unwanted handguns and rifles in exchange for $100 and $50 gift cards later this month in Davis to to help prevent violent or accidents involving firearms.

The gun buyback event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 19 at the Yolo County Health and Human Services building at 600 A Street, just west Civic Center Park in Davis. Residents can turn in their guns without any identification and no questions asked, sheriff’s officials said this week in a Facebook post.

The firearms turned in must be fully functional, sheriff’s officials said, and they will not be accepting ammunition or explosives. Residents must bring their guns to the event in a vehicle with the firearms unloaded in the trunk of the vehicle. No walk-ups will be allowed, and residents must stay inside their vehicles and follow all directions at the event.

Sheriff’s officials said $100 gift cards will be given in exchange for a long gun (rifle) or a privately manufactured firearm commonly referred to as a ghost gun. The $50 gift cards will be given in exchange for a handgun turned in.

The gift cards are limited and available while supplies last, and sheriff’s officials said they reserve the right to limit gift card payements a person may receive regardless of the number or type of firearms surrendered.

The Sheriff’s Office held its first gun buyback event in August 2023 at this same location, where residents turned in 150 firearms. A sheriff’s spokesman said after the event that the Sheriff’s Office — in partnership with the Davis Police Department — handed out $10,000 in Visa gift cards, which ran out by 1 p.m. on that day.
